Learn countries, flags and capitals online for free
GeoQuiz is a geography quiz covering all 195 countries of the world: find them on the map, learn their capitals and recognise their flags. The map uses real borders (Natural Earth), and every country comes with a short memory aid.
Unlike a quick flag quiz, GeoQuiz remembers what you already know. It works like flashcards: what you know comes up less often, what you are unsure about comes back sooner. That way the capitals stick for weeks, not minutes. It is free to play in your browser on phone, tablet and PC.
How it works
- Every country is three cards: location, capital and flag. Only city states such as Monaco, whose capital shares the country's name, have no capital card.
- Countries come in small bites, each in three steps: Learn (the country on the map, its flag, capital and memory aid), Practise (two answers, a hint button, mistakes come back at the end) and Test (four answers, no help). Score 90 % or more to pass and unlock the next bite.
- The daily review brings back due cards from every continent, up to 20 per round. A right answer moves a card up one box (back after 1, 3, 7, 14, 30 and 60 days); a wrong one sends it back to box 1.
- Questions such as "Where is …?", "Which country is highlighted?", "What is the capital of …?" or "Which country has this flag?". From box 3 on, you tap countries straight on the map instead of choosing from answers.
Continents and modes
- Six packs, 195 countries: Europe (45 countries in 8 bites), Asia (47 in 8), Africa (54 in 9), North America and Caribbean (23 in 4), South America (12 in 2) and Oceania (14 in 2), each ordered from the best-known countries onwards.
- Free practice for each continent: location, capitals, flags or mixed, 10 questions, without touching your boxes.
- The progress map colours every country by its box and shows how many countries you have mastered.
- Without an account you learn Europe on the learning path and can practise every continent freely. With a free PanicLines account you learn all continents, and your progress is the same on every device.
- New and still in testing: a history section with events for each country on a timeline, built the same way.
Controls
- Tap or click to pick an answer or a country on the map.
- Zoom the map with two fingers or the mouse wheel and drag it with one finger; there are buttons for zoom and reset too. Small countries have a round marker, and where several countries sit close together a magnifier zooms in.
- Keyboard: 1–4 answer, Enter continues, Esc leaves the round. While learning, the arrow keys page through the countries.
- Every map question can also be answered as a multiple choice. Larger text and reduced motion can be switched on in the settings.
Learning tips
- A few minutes every day: the daily review is short. Doing it regularly sticks far better than one long session a week.
- Use the memory aids: the short mnemonics while learning link capital and country – read them even when you already know the answer.
- Learn the neighbours: each bite groups countries from one region. Look at the map while learning to see who borders whom; small countries become much easier to find.
- Spot flags by their details: many flags look alike (red-white-red, or green-white-red). Look at coats of arms, the order of the stripes and whether they run across or down.
- Mistakes are useful: a card you get wrong returns the next day – exactly when you need it.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best way to learn world capitals?
- In small portions, reviewed at growing intervals. GeoQuiz splits the countries into bites and brings each card back after 1, 3, 7, 14, 30 and 60 days – wrong answers already the next day.
- Is GeoQuiz free?

- Does the flag quiz work on my phone?
- Yes, in the browser on phone, tablet and PC, with nothing to download. Zoom the map with two fingers. You can also add GeoQuiz to your home screen and play offline.
