Play 2048 free online: MergeUp
MergeUp is a calm number puzzle in the style of 2048: you swipe all tiles on a 4×4 board in one direction. When two equal numbers meet, they merge into double the number, two 2s become a 4, two 4s an 8. Every move adds a new tile, and the board fills up. The goal is 2048 and beyond.
You play for free in your browser, without signing up or downloading, on phone, tablet and PC. The classic mode has no time pressure: the game is saved after every move, so you can stop at any time and carry on later. A game takes about 3 to 15 minutes, very good games much longer.
How to play
- Swipe in one of four directions. All tiles slide as far as they can, to the edge or to the next tile.
- Two equal tiles that meet merge. Each tile merges at most once per move: 2-2-2-2 becomes 4-4, not 8. Of three equal tiles, the two at the front in the direction of the move merge.
- After each move a new 2 (mostly) or 4 (rarely) appears. A move that changes nothing does not count.
- Every merge scores the value of the new tile. When the board is full and no move is left, the game is over.
- At 2048 there is a short celebration, then you keep playing as far as you can. You can take back a move three times per game.
Modes
- Classic 4×4: the standard game, as long as it lasts.
- Big 5×5: more room and longer games, with a leaderboard of its own (with a free account).
- Daily game: a 4×4 board every day with the same luck for everyone. With an account your first attempt counts for the daily leaderboard, after that you can practise.
- Time attack: 3 minutes, as many points as you can.
Fair luck
Which tile comes next is fixed for each game. Undo does not change it: take a move back and the same tile comes again afterwards. So nobody can re-roll their luck. For the leaderboards the server replays every game move by move; points and biggest tile are always its own.
Themes, review and statistics
- Instead of numbers the themes Garden (from seed to forest), Space (from dust to galaxy) and Ocean show symbols. They change only the look; if you like, the number appears small on the tile.
- After a game the review shows your points per move and marks where the board had hardly any free cells left. You can page through the game move by move.
- Milestones (the first 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, ten daily games, 2048 without undo) and personal statistics with average and end tiles show how you improve.
Controls
- Phone and tablet: swipe on the board in one direction; a short movement is enough.
- Mouse: drag on the board in one direction.
- Keyboard: arrow keys or W A S D; Z or Backspace takes back the last move.
- You can switch off the animations in the settings. A screen reader announces after each move what merged and where the new tile is.
Tips
- Keep your biggest tile in a corner and swipe in only two or three directions so it stays there.
- Build a descending row along the edge, for example 256, 128, 64, 32. Then the tiles merge like a chain.
- Watch the free cells: when it gets tight, make a safe move rather than hoping for a particular new tile.
- Save your three undos for real mistakes, such as your big tile slipping out of its corner.
Frequently asked questions
- Is MergeUp free?
- Yes. You play without signing up or downloading and there is nothing to buy. A free PanicLines account adds 5×5, the leaderboards, themes, review and statistics, and your game continues on any device.
- Is MergeUp the same as 2048?
- The rules are the familiar ones: swipe, merge equal numbers, get as far as you can. On top there is a 5×5 board, a daily game with the same luck for everyone, a 3-minute mode, themes with symbols and a review of every game.
- Can I play MergeUp on my phone?
- Yes. MergeUp runs in the browser on phone, tablet and PC, in portrait and landscape. You can add it to your home screen and then play offline as well.
- Is my game saved?
- Yes, after every move. Without an account it stays in this browser; with an account it is kept on the server, so you continue exactly where you left off on another device. A game you started is taken over when you log in.
- How does the daily game work?
- Every day there is a new board, and everyone gets the same new tiles in the same order. With an account your first attempt counts for the daily leaderboard; after that you can play it again for practice. The next one comes at midnight (German time).
