Play Reversi online for free
Reversi is a classic strategy game for two on a board of 8 × 8 squares. Every disc is black on one side and white on the other: trap your opponent's discs between two of yours and they flip to your colour. When the board is full, whoever has more discs wins.
On PanicLines you play for free in your browser on phone, tablet and computer, with no download and no sign-up. Take on the AI at three levels or play with a friend on one device; most games take five to fifteen minutes.
Rules
- Four discs start in the centre, two of each colour crosswise. Black moves first, then the players take turns.
- Place a disc so that it outflanks opposing discs: in a straight line, across, up and down or diagonal, between the new disc and one of yours. All outflanked discs flip, in every direction at once.
- A move must flip at least one disc. If you cannot place anywhere you have to pass; the game shows it for a moment and hands the move over.
- The game ends when neither player can move, usually because the board is full. Whoever then has more discs wins; with as many each it is a draw.
Modes and AI levels
- Against the AI at three levels: Easy mostly grabs the most discs, Medium looks two half-moves ahead and watches the corners, Hard looks six half-moves ahead and plays the last eight squares perfectly.
- Against the AI you choose your colour: Black, White, or alternating from game to game. A slip of the finger is undone with one tap.
- Two players, one device: take turns tapping, Black starts, and your run of wins and draws is counted.
Controls
- Tap a square to place a disc there. Small dots show where you can play; you can hide them in the settings.
- The last move is marked, flipped discs turn one after the other, and the disc count of both colours is always shown at the top.
- On a computer you can also pick squares with Tab and Enter; “Reduce motion” turns the animations off.
Tips and strategy
- Corners are gold: a disc in a corner can never be flipped and often makes the whole edge safe.
- Mind the squares next to empty corners: playing right next to a free corner, especially diagonally, often hands the corner to your opponent.
- Less is often more: lots of discs early on help little. It matters more that you have many moves to choose from and your opponent few.
- Edges with care: solid rows along an edge are strong, single edge discs are easy to attack.
- The end counts: in the last moves every square decides. Count carefully and you can still turn a game you thought was lost.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Reversi free here?
- Yes. You play right in your browser with no sign-up and no download, and there is nothing to buy.
- Can two players play Reversi on one phone?
- Yes. In “Two players, one device” mode you take turns tapping on the same phone or tablet. The game runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers.
- What happens if I cannot move?
- Then you have to pass. The game shows it for a moment and hands the move over by itself. When neither player can move, the game is over and the discs are counted.
- Is my game saved?
- Yes. A game in progress survives reloading the page. Without an account it stays in this browser; with a PanicLines account it is kept in your account along with your run, so you can carry on on any device.
